Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio
The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Falling Apart?
Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever a binding element holding it together to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Speculation that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or imploding.
Matteo's Unforeseen Return
A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio during this campaign. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to stay there for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.
He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Finding His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the exact type of the player's talent. Originally described as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
